Samira Alikhanzadeh: @ Ars Libri (500 Harrison Ave)

“The images I use in my work date to the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s; a period following the banishment of the veil in Iran. By applying mirrors to the surface, I create the viewers’ marked though incomplete presence within the framework of my composition. I thus make a direct connection between the subjects in the past and the viewers in the present. They in turn become a part of the composition and possible descendants of the subjects, looking into the past or, perhaps like me, satisfying their voyeuristic urge to enter the lives and memories of generations gone by." - Samira Alikhanzadeh

Continuing their series of exhibitions of Iranian artists, Robert Klein Gallery and Azita Bina are proud to present the mixed-media work of Samira Alikhanzadeh. Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1967, Alikhanzadeh uses mirror fragments, found photographs, and acrylic paint to experiment with ideas of past and present identities, presence, and perspective. Her work is in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Devi Art Foundation, and Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art.

Three of Alikhanzadeh's pieces will be shown at Robert Klein Gallery @ Ars Libri (500 Harrison Ave) through Saturday, September 27; a First Friday reception was held last Friday, September 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. The event was free and open to the public. Gohar Dashti’s series Iran, Untitled will be shown at Robert Klein Gallery (38 Newbury St) September 5 through 26.
